8 Things to do During a Blackout

Blackouts have become rare since the millennium and only usually happens during a serious storm. Now due to our dependence to technology, and the need to check our Facebook accounts every now and then, a few hours of total blackout could spell out ‘disaster’ to most of us city dwellers.

But don’t fret! Because of yesterday’s despicable day-long dose of darkness throughout the whole Metro, I have come up with a list of things to do in case we get robbed of electricity and precious internet time again in the future.

  • Burn, baby, burn. Yep. Go burn stuff. Light up a candle and start burning some random things inside the house (ex-lover’s photos and letter, your annoying sister’s birth certificate, etc.). Then just observe. If your parents expresses their concern, just tell them you’re an ‘artist’. It’s actually a little therapeutic to set things on fire and watch them melt or disintegrate into dust. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a flamethrower somewhere. Just be careful not to ‘accidentally’ burn your annoying sister.
  • Sharing ghost stories are for sissies! Go out there and hunt for real ghosts. Just make sure you’re prepared to run like heck in case you managed to make yourself believe that you actually saw one.
  • Look at the stars. Seriously, this is a chance to look at the night sky because your vision won’t be disturbed by city lights. Living in the metro, it’s very rare to see these billion brilliant lights in the sky, so see this as a good opportunity to marvel at something that city people don’t do much anymore.
  • Play hide and seek. Go ask your entire family (and your neighbors, too!) to play this old school street game and be really persistent about it. Convincing them to play would take a good hour or two and by the time you’ve persuaded/forced them to play, everybody would only have enough energy for one round.
  • Lock yourself in your room. Play an upbeat song (I suggest California Gurls or Bad Romance for the guys). Stand in front of a mirror. Create your very own choreography to the song. Make sure you remember each step because this is extremely useful when you’re planning to court that girl you’ve been crushing on for a while now. It’s better to practice with a poker face on, too.
  • If you really miss Facebook, then consider living it in real life. Whenever people say random things, poke them gently and say “Like!” with your most enthusiastic tone and a giddy facial expression. In return, whenever a random thought pops in your head, say it out loud and wait for people to respond the same by looking at them intently.
  • If your folks folks didn’t enjoy the idea of playing hide and seek, then you can have your own amusement by following these steps: Hide yourself in the bathroom for an hour, when someone comes in… well, the prankster in you would already know how to improvise. Change locations every hour. Props and make-up are recommended.
  • Dress up as a zombie and scare all the little kids happily playing around the neighborhood.

As I write this, we still have no electricity at home so I might be tempted to actually do the last tip if the lights are still out tonight. Photo from my Halloween birthday party last year where I dressed up as a pretty convincing and yucky zombie. Hahaha.

your zombie pic is really cool and very convincing.

those blackouts were very common in the 90′s. during those times, there are lots of things to do – there were no social networks and online games that would give you withdrawal symptoms. and like your list we used to play hide and seek, hunt for ghosts, tell scary stories, and do a lot of pranks! i don’t think these are applicable to the kids of the present generation.

Can I add to the list? Jack off ahahahahaha.

I like burning stuff too. Sometimes I cut locks of my own hair and burn it, sometimes I melt whole candles, sometimes I light up cigarettes and just watch the smoke…

But one thing I really like doing during brownouts is telling ghost stories… to myself. While burning stuff… Hahahaha.
