Zipping and Zorbing in Davao City

I’m a wuss. Let’s just get it out there and let it be known that I’m a sissy boy in pansy pants. I’m that guy who screamed like a girl while riding the Flying Fiesta and who had his head down atop the Wheel of Fate. Speed and heights are two of my worst fears but it was my first time in Davao and I wanted to experience riding the zipline and zorbing.

For our second day in Davao, it was an optional part of itinerary to take the zip. I’ve been apprehensive about it several months before the trip and I sort of dodged taking both zips in Bicol and Tagaytay. But I can’t escape this now. The other bloggers convinced me to ride it and so wewent to Zip City Hilltop at Barangay Langub which is the friendliest zipline there. Of course, I didn’t care how friendly it was, if the Wheel of Fate scared me, I’m positive this would as well.

View from the top

Being the friendliest zipline in town, traversing 320 meters 120 feet above the ground is still no joke for a sissy boy. I paid the P200.00 fee, got strapped with harnesses, and slowly climbed the tower waiting for my turn to take the step.

Of course, my fellow bloggers were very supportive. Orman even said, “Rob, iwan mo na lang sakin password ng PayPal account mo.” Thanks, Orman. How sweet of you. There were four of us who wanted to take the zip: Karen, Don, Fitz, and myself, but it would be the first time for me and Karen. I was scared shitless. I think I left my balls in Manila.

After Fitz and Karen reached the other end, it was my turn. The zip guy attached my harness to the line and he told me to sit down on the edge of the ramp. Then he slowly pushed me out pero sinabit ko pa rin yung isang binti ko. Shutangina! Di ko ata kaya! Tapos sinampal niya ako, wag daw akong bakla. CHAR. Joke lang. When I realized I was already hanging on for dear life, I started screaming and went on for about half of the ride.

I took a video of the whole thing but I’m not posting it here because it was embarrassing! The whole ride is a little over 30 seconds and I was able to enjoy the view after I got tired from screaming. When I got to the other side, it felt like a huge accomplishment! Tinubuan ulit ako ng balls. I might even have the guts to try other ziplines now.

After the zipline, we headed to Zorb Park for the ultimate hamster experience! In case you don’t know, zorbing is an activity where a person gets inside this huge transparent plastic orb and is pushed down a hill. There are two types of orbs, harnessed and non-harnessed and I think both orbs are pretty self-explanatory already. Some non-harnessed orbs have water inside to make the ride more slippery and it’s called a HydroZorb.

The moment I saw in on television, I immediately hoped that there would come a day that zorbing would be made available here in the Philippines. So when I saw Ada’s post about it in last year’s DFAT, I went nuts about it and it’s actually the first reason I had when I applied for DFAT this year. For P200.00 a ride, I thought it was worth going to Davao for.

Me and Darlyn of http://beautifulmindanao.blogspot.com/

In Zorb Park (near Crocodile Park), we rode the harnessed orb where two people are strapped on opposite ends inside the orb before it is goes rolling down. I was on the far end of the orb while Darlyn was in front of me. When they started rolling the ball, eventually tumbling down the hill, I started screaming at the top of my lungs again. It wasn’t really scary, but the feeling of being inside a washing machine was madness. Nakakahilo and I didn’t like the fact that I had no control of it.

Not everyone can ride the orb, though. If you are over 180 kilos, they will not allow you to zorb. Also, it’s not advisable if you just had lunch. Like, duh.

At the end of the day, I was pretty happy and satisfied that I was able to face my fears. It wasn’t pretty, and I totally embarrassed myself but it was all worth it as I got to tick off another box in my list of goals!

There are Zorbs in EK. But instead of going down the hill, you are gonna push it around while floating above the lake.

Hmmm…. mas okay nga siguro ang zipline kasi wala pang 1 minute safe ka na. Ang mga theme park rides mas matagal ang torture eh. Hahaha.

you should try zipline sah Papa Kit’s sa Liloan… u’d be crossing a body of water.

    • Robbie
      Posted June 9, 2011 at 10:48 pm | Permalink

Ooooh I had to Google pa where Liloan is. Hehehe. Hopefully I can go there in the future! They also have a similar zipline above water in Legazpi City, Albay sa Embarcadero. Was supposed to ride it but they closed early during Black Saturday.

      Thanks for the suggestion! =)

  15. Posted June 9, 2011 at 12:32 pm | Permalink

Waaagh.. I was on that same zipline you were on a couple of years back. Same experience, I kept on holding on the edge while “kuya” is pushing (and that was involuntary), I screamed until I was halfway, then appreciated the view, and then I wanted more. =)

Haven’t tried Zorbing though. Might try it when I go home in August. BTW, did you go to Deca Wakeboard Park? It’s in my to-do-list as well. =)

Try the Xcelerator! It’s beside Zipline City lang, I think. They have faster zips ata. For the Zorbs, yeah I must warn you that it’s super nauseating inside. Hahaha!
