Asian Film Festival at Shang Cineplex!

I’m sort of a fan of the Film Festivals being shown annually at Shang Cineplex in Shaw. My favorite being Eiga Sai, which shows really cool movies from Japan. But I’ve noticed that we actually lack something that showcases the best from all over Asia. Good thing I found out about the Asian Film Festival, organized by Asia Society Philippine Foundation Inc., which will start this week from May 17 to 21. Continue reading

Bigshot Film Festival: Modern Heroes

To help promote fresh new talent in the film industry, SM Cinema partnered with the Film Development Council of the Philippines to bring you the first year of the Bigshot Film Festival, tackling the theme of Modern Heroes. I was invited to their press conference last Tuesday to see the previews of the 3 independent films and got to meet some of the actors as well. The Adventures of Tintin

Back when I was a young boy, the type of boy that still liked girls, there was one animated show that I made sure I did not miss every afternoon. It’s a story about this young investigative reporter who traveled the world solving mysteries with his trusty dog, Snowy, and a band of other quirky characters. As a young kid, I believe it sparked my love for adventure and it could be one of the original reasons I found love in sudden bouts of exploration… and secretly, in ginger men. So when I heard that a 3D animated film for The Adventures of Tintin was coming out this year, I was ecstatic. Continue reading

A Map for Saturday

Documentaries are not my thing because I always I associate them with depressing images. Most of the time, I’d rather be ignorant to the sad reality and just stay inside my happy bubble. However, when I heard about A Map for Saturday, a documentary about the lifestyle of backpack travellers, I had to make an exception.  Continue reading

Zombadings hits theaters nationwide on August 31!

Sumpa ba ang maging maging bakla?

It was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the trailer as Roderick Paulate’s character was cursing a young boy to become a homo when he grows up. Is being gay so terrible that it’s considered a curse? I don’t think so. And Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington disproved my earlier assumption that it was going to send a negative note about the fabulous kind. Continue reading

All is well with the 3 Idiots

From a post about elementary students, we now move on to college! I’m pretty sure most of us have a vivid memory of what happened during our college days so this entry would be easily relatable. And I must ask again, were you able to take the degree that you wanted? Did you follow what you were passionate about? Continue reading

The beauty of death in Departures

Departures, Okuribito

If there’s one single film that you should see at this year’s Eiga Sai, it would be Yojiro Takita’s 2008 film Departures which served as the opening film for this event. We waited in line for three hours but it was so worth it and I feel honored that I was able to see it on the big screen. To date, it’s probably the most emotionally-succulent film I’ve seen and I have buckets of tears to prove it. Continue reading

All raves for Rango

I love it when a new trailer comes out and you are left wondering what the movie is all about. You get a little bit interested, decides to watch it with no expectations whatsoever, then leaves the movie house blown away by what you just saw. That’s exactly what I experienced after watching Rango. I don’t think it’s the most epic epicness movie of the year, but it goes to straight to my list of all-time faves for it has a lot of things going for it in terms of story, character development, cinematography, graphics, character design, and humor. Continue reading

All Thai’d up

Why do Thai movies almost always have open-ended stories? Of course, I am basing this assumption on my wide knowledge of Thai culture from watching 3 of their films. Hahaha. Not really wide at all, but still those 3 movies all had endings where they let the viewer make up the conclusion for themselves. I mean, I have no qualms about it but I was curious if all of their movies are like that. Besides, their movies are more nakakakilig than the Pinoy ones. Continue reading
